Why this lab Break the dashboard with dangerous filter states, then make it safe.
Every filter changes the denominator and may create unstable or identifiable cells. Operate the dashboard, locate the privacy-risk state, and apply the correct suppression rule.
- The minimum cell size. When a filter state leaves fewer than 5 tested students, suppress the outcome value: show a label such as “Suppressed (n < 5)”, keep the denominator note, and say why the value is blank. Rounding or adding decimals does not protect anyone; a percentage from four students discloses them at any precision.
- Hiding names is not enough. A small cell can be re-identified: anyone who knows which three students sat the course can read their result off the dashboard, even though no name is shown.
- Each filter must earn its place. Every added filter multiplies the filter states you must test for small cells and adds to what the reader has to hold in mind. Keep the filters that answer the dashboard's decision question and test each remaining state.
