About the CSET Mathematics

The California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET) Mathematics credential requires passing three separate subtests. Each subtest is scored independently on a 100–300 scale with a passing score of 220. You can take them on separate testing dates — passing scores carry forward.

Unlike most state math certification exams, the CSET includes constructed-response questions where you write out explanations of mathematical reasoning. These are scored by human raters. QuantegyAI’s question bank targets the multiple-choice component of each subtest.

The three subtests

Subtest I — Number and Quantity + Algebra
613 + 260 Qs
Real and complex numbers, number theory, proportional reasoning • Expressions, equations, functions, linear algebra, and abstract algebra
50 multiple-choice + 4 constructed-response • Calculator permitted
Subtest II — Geometry + Trigonometry
314 + 77 Qs
Euclidean and coordinate geometry, transformations, measurement • Trigonometric functions, identities, and applications
40 multiple-choice + 4 constructed-response • Calculator permitted
Subtest III — Calculus + Probability & Statistics
102 + 280 Qs
Limits, derivatives, integrals, and series • Probability, data analysis, and statistical reasoning
30 multiple-choice + 2 constructed-response • No calculator

How adaptive prep is different

With three subtests and six content domains, knowing where to spend your prep time is half the battle. QuantegyAI uses IRT to estimate your ability on each domain after about 20 placement questions, then surfaces the highest-leverage practice for your specific gaps. Pass probability updates after every question — across all six domains simultaneously.

Frequently asked questions

How many subtests does the CSET Mathematics have?

Three: Subtest I (Number/Quantity + Algebra), Subtest II (Geometry + Trigonometry), Subtest III (Calculus + Prob/Stats). Each is scored separately; you can take them on different dates.

What is the passing score?

220 on a 100–300 scale for each subtest, scored independently.

Can I take the subtests separately?

Yes. Passing scores carry forward indefinitely. Most candidates take Subtests I and II together, then tackle III separately.

Which subtest is hardest?

Most candidates find Subtest III (Calculus) hardest, especially after time away from the subject. Subtest I is the most content-heavy. Our adaptive engine lets you target whichever subtest is your priority.

Is there a calculator?

A scientific calculator is permitted for Subtests I and II. No calculator for Subtest III. QuantegyAI includes both modes.
