Most prep tools serve a fixed list. Watch one full cycle of what actually happens after a wrong answer — the numbers below are computed with the same formulas the app runs.

  1. A wrong answer, not a careless one

    The learner picks 90% on a base-rate question — the single most common wrong answer to it. The engine treats that as information, not noise.

  2. The mastery estimate drops

    Knowledge tracing revises this competency from 62% down to 21%. One wrong answer moves it that far because the model already held doubts.

  3. Ability is re-estimated

    The ability estimate \( \theta \) falls to −0.42, and every candidate question’s predicted success rate moves with it.

  4. The question bank is re-scored

    Candidates now model at 87 / 78 / 64 / 46 / 34%. The engine serves the one closest to 78% — hard enough to learn from, easy enough to keep going. Not the most informative item, which would sit near 46% and feel punishing.

  5. Mastery recovers, and the loop continues

    A correct answer lifts mastery to 57%. Reaching mastered takes 0.95 confidence plus 5 answers spanning 2 different days, so one good session cannot fake it.
